For the first days of parenting...

Upon returning home from the maternity hospital, you're alone with a thousand questions in an instant. That's why we've prepared some advice for newborn and baby care that will significantly facilitate the first days of parenting.

How to bathe a newborn?

Lay cotton gauze in the tub. Fill a third of the tub height with pleasantly tempered water, so that it is not too cold or too hot (test temperature with your palm or elbow). In the tub, add a spoon of olive oil or gentle Melem Baby oil with Mimosa extract and mix it well with the water. Hold the newborn in your hand, so she can feel your proximity, and gently pour water over her. You can prepare a small container or small cotton gauze for this. Pay attention to the folds (neck, armpits, thighs) and the diaper area. When washing the head, be careful that the water does not flow over the baby's face. To prevent drops from ending up in the baby's eyes, you can apply Melem on the baby's eyebrows before bathing. There's no need to rinse the baby after bathing. The mixture of water and oil nourishes, hydrates and protects the sensitive skin of a child that has not fully developed and created its defense mechanism yet. So pay attention not to add paraffin oil to the bath but a natural one.

After bathing, the baby needs to be wrapped in a warm towel and carefully dried with a soft gauze or cotton towel, paying special attention to the folds in which water, but also bacteria, can accumulate, leading to irritations or inflammatory processes (read more in the answer to question number 8.). Never leave a newborn or baby unattended while bathing!

What to do with cradle cap?

Small flakes that appear on the baby's scalp are called cradle cap (seborrheic dermatitis). They can be yellowish, brownish, and they can appear immediately after birth or after 3. month. It happens due to increased secretion of glands, weight gain, oily skin. You need to take care of it carefully, but never exfoliate or mechanically remove (parents often do this by scratching the scalp with a nail), so as not to cause an infection.

It's ideal to apply natural oil, for example olive or gentle Melem Baby oil, on a pad, and gently tap to soften the crust. Then rinse the hair with a gentle shampoo and lukewarm water and dry it well. After that, gently comb with a soft baby hairbrush. Repeat this procedure until the cradle cap is completely naturally removed which may take you a few days or weeks.

How to properly take care of the diaper area?

The ideal care for the diaper area of a newborn is with lukewarm water and a pad, after which you need to dry the clean skin well with gauze, and only then apply the cream for the diaper area. Apply the cream in a thin layer and gently rub it into the skin until it is absorbed. Do not leave thick layers of cream on the folds because this can only cause irritations or inflammations. If the child still gets diaper rash, it needs to be washed more often, dried, and for care apply a cream with zinc.

In the Biobaza Baby offer, you can find a natural lanolin cream for the diaper area which can also be applied to dry skin of the body and face, while in the Melem Baby offer you can find an effective cream with zinc that supports the protection from irritations, redness, and the occurrence of diaper rash. If the rash does not pass and skin rags start to appear, it is necessary to seek help from a pediatrician.

We recommend using wet or oil wipes for practical care when you are traveling or outside the house.

When to introduce shampoos and cosmetics?

The Melem Baby collection contains a gentle 3-in-1 bath, shampoo, and shower gel; a universal cream for dry skin care, but also to protect targeted areas from moisture or drying out; oil and oil wipes for facial and body care, and a protective cream with zinc.

From the first day, from the arrival from the maternity hospital, use a protective cream for the diaper area in daily care routine, while for bathing and care of the folds after bathing use Melem Baby natural oil with Mimosa extract. Gradually, after the third month, you can add a few drops of Melem Baby's bath or use it diluted for washing the head.

You can use oil wipes for the diaper area, but also for facial and body care from the first day, but give preference to water when maintaining the hygiene of your baby's entire body.

How and when to start with tooth care?

In newborns and breastfed babies, a soor or thrush infection often occurs - it is caused by the Candida Albicanis fungus. It manifests itself in the form of white spots or plaques on the baby's tongue or mucous membrane of the child's oral cavity. Do not mistake it for milk deposits after feeding, as they can be removed with gauze, while soor remains on the mucous membrane.

Therefore, it is necessary to take care of the oral cavity with a clean, wet gauze with which you gently brush the gums. With the appearance of the first teeth, they can also be wiped with a wet gauze, and with sprouted teeth, the baby can be accustomed to brushing. Make sure not to give the brush to the baby as a toy because she can seriously hurt herself with it. Equally, it is important to know that a healthy milk tooth is the best guardian of your child's health, but also the place where a permanent tooth will sprout. Therefore, careful oral hygiene should be maintained and healthy habits for life should be instilled.

If a soor disease occurs, it is necessary to contact a pediatrician, and for detailed care of the first teeth, to consult a dentist.

Can I expose the baby to the sun for vitamin D?

On the first check-up, after the baby's first month, the pediatrician will prescribe you vitamin D drops. He will also advise you that the child should definitely spend time outdoors during beautiful, sunny days. This does not mean that your baby has to stay in direct sunlight. In fact, for children up to a year, direct sun exposure is not recommended. The child will get enough sun rays even if she plays in the shade or walks in the stroller.

Consult your pediatrician or dermatologist about the application of creams with a protective factor against sunlight. For European climates, dermatologists recommend SPF30 as the ideal protection under the assumption that you do not stay in direct sunlight. The Melem Sun collection offers a carefully formulated cream for the face and body with a protection factor of 30 to make your stay in the sun safe and pleasant. Be sure to read the instructions for use of sun creams and replenish the protection after bathing or wiping with a towel.

How to take care of baby's nails?

Even babies need a manicure, i.e. pedicure. Immediately from the maternity hospital, in order for the baby not to scratch her face, it is necessary to gently remove her nails with scissors. Be careful not to cut nails down to the root which can cause sores and pain. Never cut baby's nails with clippers. Special scissors are available for that, they are easy to handle, and available in all drugstores.

You will notice that babies, like children, have nails that grow fast on both hands and feet. It is the best to cut them with scissors after bathing and to do this once a week as a part of a special ritual of taking care of your baby. By doing so, you also create a habit for the child for hygiene which she will continue to apply when she grows up.

For soft and cared nails without pressures and cuticles, after cutting, you can rub in a droplet of universal Melem cream. The baby will really like this massage because the area of the fingers, hands, and feet is especially sensitive, and babies enjoy gentle massages that relax and calm them.

What experienced moms know about baby care?

What experienced moms know about baby care?

A few tips from experienced moms on areas that can be forgotten after bathing:

  • be sure to dry your baby's ears and the area behind the ear with a cotton gauze to prevent dry skin and consequently an infection, and after drying apply a thin layer of Melem Baby oil and universal cream;
  • pay special attention to the navel as it needs to be dried well so that water would not accumulate and create redness and infection;
  • the area between the baby's foot fingers is also prone to water retention, which can lead to dry, rough skin and infection;
  • gently wash or wipe the area around the mouth with a wet gauze after breastfeeding or feeding to prevent redness and infection, if redness has already occurred - treat clean, dry skin with a thin layer of universal Melem cream;
  • during cold rainy or windy weather, protect baby's delicate skin with a thin layer of cream before leaving the house;
  • do not bathe your baby every day - 2 to 3 times a week is enough, but do it at the same time and make it a little wellness routine in which both you and your baby will enjoy;
  • heat the towel for your baby, in which you will wrap her after bathing, babies love warmth;
  • learn to massage your baby - babies love touch, and massage will relax and calm them, thus preparing them for a peaceful sleep.
